The Tusheti region, nestled among the majestic peaks of the Georgian Caucasus, is one of those places that seem to leap straight out of an epic tale. We at Foto ReD Photographic Agency had the privilege of exploring this remote and fascinating land, creating a stunning photographic reportage that captures the authentic soul of Tusheti.
A Dream Stay at Tusheti Tower
During our journey, we stayed at one of the most evocative accommodations in the region: the Tusheti Tower, located in the center of Omalo. This unique dwelling, carved out of a medieval slate stone tower, offered us an unforgettable experience. Sleeping in the tower felt like stepping back in time, immersed in history and surrounded by breathtaking views.
Beyond its architectural charm and spectacular location, Tusheti Tower won us over with its magnificent hospitality. Each morning we woke to generous, wholesome breakfasts made with local ingredients and served with care.
The main meals were equally hearty and delicious, featuring traditional Georgian dishes that celebrate the authentic flavors of the mountains. From artisanal cheeses to warm soups, every course was an invitation to conviviality.
The warmth of the hosts, always ready to share stories and advice, made our stay even more special. Tusheti Tower is not just a place to sleep: it’s a refuge where you feel welcomed, pampered, and part of a community that lives in harmony with nature and tradition.
Ancient Villages and Living Culture
We visited all the historic villages of the region, where time seems to stand still. Defensive towers, stone houses, and centuries-old monasteries tell stories of courage and tradition. The people of Tusheti, the Tushs, welcomed us with legendary Georgian hospitality, sharing customs, typical dishes, and tales passed down through generations.
Each village has a distinct soul and timeless charm.
Omalo: The Heart of Tusheti
Omalo is the nerve center of the region, a starting point for explorations and trekking. Here stands the Keselo Fortress, a complex of historic towers that overlooks the valley and offers breathtaking panoramic views. Omalo is also where Tush culture is most vibrantly expressed: traditional music, dances, and fireside storytelling gifted us moments of genuine connection.
Dartlo: The Stone Jewel
Perched on a verdant slope, Dartlo is a fairytale village where time seems frozen. The dark stone houses, with slate roofs and carved balconies, line cobbled paths winding among medieval defensive towers. The silence is broken only by the sound of streams and the wind through the pines. Photographing Dartlo is like capturing a fragment of legend.
Shenako: Spirituality and Serenity
More secluded and immersed in tranquility, Shenako is known for its 19th-century Orthodox church, one of the few still active in the region. Surrounded by flower-filled meadows and woods, the village’s serene atmosphere invites reflection. Here we found perfect scenes for nature photography.
These villages, nestled among the Caucasus mountains, are living testimonies of a culture that defies time. Our photographic reportage aimed to capture not only the visual beauty but also the deep soul of Tusheti.
Our photographic reportage documents every nuance of this land: from the proud faces of its people to ancestral architecture, from boundless landscapes to scenes of everyday life. Tusheti is not just a destination—it’s a journey into the purest essence of the Caucasus.
If you want to discover our work or plan an adventure in this magical region, Tusheti awaits with its wild beauty and ancient heart.
An Invitation to Your Next Journey
Tusheti is not just a destination: it’s a return to the essential, a place where nature sets the rhythm and history whispers through the stones. For us at Foto ReD Photographic Agency, this journey was much more than a reportage—it was an encounter with the soul of the Caucasus.
If you seek landscapes that speak to the heart, villages that tell legends, and hospitality that warms the soul, Tusheti awaits you. And when you’re there, among the stone towers and timeless valleys, you’ll understand why this land remains etched not only in photographs but also in memories.
